California Mission Trip 2024 - DAY 2

Sheetrock and Paint

The first portion of today’s report is courtesy of Kirsten!

We began the day in prayer, praising the Lord and asking for the ability to do His work through our hands. The youth listened and learned as Alyssa from Tiny Pines taught them about sheetrock, how to use a saw, and how to take measurements. Everyone worked as a team to complete each task at hand. As Jay, Laura, Pastor Mike, Jay, Frank and Debby measured and fasted sheetrock upstairs, the youth completed insulating the downstairs walls and got to work on installing sheetrock downstairs.

The youth learned about studs and making things plum, how to use tape measures and impact drills. Most importantly, the learned Alyssa’s Golden Rule: Always carry a pencil. If you get caught without a pencil, it results in you having to do 10 push-ups!

Brenda and other team members painted trim on the right side of the house despite the head of the sun and rising temperatures.

The day’s work was strenuous and we went home with a feeling of accomplishment, as we all worked together to complete the mission of the day. When Alyssa had to leave to pick up her children from daycare, about half the group returned to our local home. A group did stay to do some additional work, and Alec volunteered to stay with that group to continue working on the first floor sheetrock. He showed true dedication and incredible work ethic!

There was silence on the ride home at the end of the day. God blessed us with the ability to complete our efforts together as one, surrounding us with the people needed to do our part, truly touching the lives of others by spreading kindness and love as we walk the path God has put before with the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Thank you, Kirsten, for sharing your observations of the day!

Just a slightly different perspective of the day and why we didn’t quite do everything we had hoped to do…

First, Jay got into multiple arguments with sheetrock, and it never dawned on him that the sheetrock always won the arguments.

Frank and Laura were a bit uncomfortable with the situation but didn’t know what to say.

Second, Frank tends to get a bit too comfortable at the jobsite.

There’s too much sitting around…

The group always seemed to be on breaks.
